Directed by Tim Burton in his full length debut in 1985, staring Paul Rubens as Pee-Wee Herman of The Pee-wee Herman Show fame. The movie starts off with Pee-Wee dreaming about winning the Tour De France with his bike. Awoken to the sound of his alarm clock, Pee-Wee starts his day in a rather unusual fashion.
I’ve been a fan of Pee-Wee for a while now, his antics have always brought a smile to my face. The laughs in the movie aren’t constant, leaving a gap of “unhilarity” for the viewer to gasp at. Despite this odd pattern the movie is still full of laughs that will still bring a smile to your face. It’s also the kind of film you can watch with your family and still leave with a good impression.
I really enjoyed this movie, it’s a shame it’s only a rental since the XBLVM is one of the very few places to pick this movie up in HD.
The movie was presented in 720p VC-1 at 6.8Mbps with dual pass encoding.
You would never figure but the movie is actually a really good HD flick! The quality of the print is amazing, you can tell effort was really put on the restoration. Grain is practically not existent, the same goes for artifacting.
The transfer really helps showcase the desert environment parts of the movie is shot in. I was watching the movie on my elite via HDMI so the movie was upscaled to 1080p, I have to admit, the Xbox 360 does a damn fine job upscaling HD content!
The encoded audio was Dolby Digital 5.1.
I noticed the audio wasn’t “static” throughout, at times it would dip to a low lull causing you to turn up the volume only to be forced to tone things down when the next scene “attacks” you with monster audio.
Microsoft made the right decision when they made Dolby Digital 5.1 standard across all video content on their service. It really gives them a leg up on the competition (many of whom have no guidelines for audio quality).
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is definitely worth a look, the HD film is weighing in at 4.2 GB while the SD version is a mere 1.1 GB. It will cost you 360 MP for the HD version with 240 MP for the SD version.
